Harrison Schmitt is another one of these godlike Uebermensch who became an Apollo astronaut. First he gets a Ph.D. in Geology from Harvard and becomes the only scientist who actually walks on the Moon. Then he spring boards from that triumph to become the US Senator for New Mexico as well as supreme advocate for the Space Program. Then his political career imploded because he spent too much time pushing the holy cause of Space Exploration (which the unwashed public didn't give a damn about). Now he's reinvented himself as an academic at the University of Wisconsin teaching the next generation about Space Utilization and nuclear fusion. I suspect he's spinning his wheels concerning He-3 mining on the Moon but he's been right about most everything else. It'd be nice if there was something of economic value on the Moon (but I doubt it).
