re: Andromeda nearing
Well, from what I've read, it's uncertain how the collision will occure: sidewise, to the center or another angle. It's undecided.
But before that, many stars will have died in both galaxies and new ones will be created.
But meanwhile, our telescopes will get so good that we'll see much more than even this picture can suggest:
