Columbia Hills has bedrock
Spirit is continuing its trek toward a set of hills that remain more than two kilometres away. However, ever-sharper pictures of those hills make it clear that they have bedrock exposures tens of metres thick, said deputy science team leader Ray Arvidson.
This deep layering should provide by far the deepest window ever into the red planet's geological past - and perhaps to the long-term history of water at the site.
