Bin Laden offers Europe truce

Two Arab TV channels have broadcast an audiotape said to be from Osama Bin Laden in which he offers Europe a truce if it "stops attacking Muslims".

But in the tape, aired by al-Arabiya and al-Jazeera satellite channels, the voice said the initiative would not be extended to the US, Reuters reported.

The person on the tape also vowed to avenge Israel's killing of Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin.

The authenticity of the tape could not be immediately verified.

Mr. Bin Laden is incredibly naive if he thinks his "offer" will be taken seriously. What it will more likley do is steel resolve to redouble efforts to take him out. Unfortunately, though, our resources for doing so have been recklessly redirected to a misbegotten war in Iraq which has done more to divide America from her allies than Bin Laden's "offer" could ever do. If his pitch has any political traction among Europeans, it would only be because of the terrific mistake we made by invading Iraq. One hopes though that the Europeans would not confuse our bad judgement in Iraq with our legitimate efforts to stamp out terrorism.
