For the love of chocolate, lighten up!
For a LOOOONG time before the famous 'my fellow americans, I'm a liar' address, Clinton was lampooned viciously in the press and on TV in every damn forum and context for all the various allegations that were made against him. As a tenative Clinton supporter, I learned to laugh it up with the critics, because they sure as hell weren't going to stop. I bet you did too- looong before anything was proven or became incontravertable.
You may believe that this president is innately good. This is all fine and good. But at this point in this presidency it is entirely reasonable to find the man suspect. We are in an occupation that we were told wouldn't be needed. We are flushing hundreds of billions on this occupation and "reconstruction" that was supposed to be paid for by Iraqi oil. We are loosing more lives after the 'end of major combat operations' and at least some of us believe that domestic issues, like the economy for the average worker, are even worse.
Now you may believe all of this is not at all an issue and that there are good honest reasons for all of the above, and that Bush is a moral capable genius. Right. My point is not to argue these issues with you, but to point out that rational even-headed people might need the escape of laughing at a joke about the president because they DON'T hold your faith in the nobility and virginal purity of Mr. Bush.
Bush is not Jesus Christ, Rob, he's as subject to lampooning as any political figure. Those that post and enjoy the humor are NOT being 'political whores'- in fact to fly into such a painfully (and I would say contrived) hyperbolic political indignation over a stupid little joke, and to make such political hay, is in my view being more of a politcal whore (by the Larry J definition) than posting it in the first time.
I love our syntactic duels here, and I have great respect for you in the sense that you are one poster out of maybe 3 that can really claim the title of 'open minded moderate'. All that aside: For chrissake, Rob, Lighten up and pull your head out of your own ass. IMHO, the 'lady doeth protest too much' here. I think you are just over sensitive about the flaws of the guy you supported and the implied flaws in your own thinking and ideology. Lighten up. Laugh a little. Its good for the soul. Besides, it aint gonna stop now. And as for notions of Context, I think OT or community is JUST FINE for this humor, as it is more of a steam valve than political statement.
