I've done a bit of reading on this. My opinion, based only on what I've read, is that al Assad is ripe for a Gaddafi-like "epiphany." It's possible that if he is shown the error of his ways, he might go the same way Gaddafi seems to be going.

How to make this point to him is open to discussion.
