And your kind response. I didn't see the preview button just above. That ought to help! I have a geo degree, been to Moab. Its fab, I know. Love the Grand Canyon. Just as you see cross bedding - I dont see it at all - though there is a lot of stuff that at first looks ripply. I think people are just confused because the laminations in these rocks are so incredibly fine. I don't think there are many terrestrial rock types with such fine laminations, though some of these types are abundant. The only ones I could think of were the varves in lakes, and deep sea sediments (and some evaporites, if I'm not mistaken). If cross bedding is there, it must be pretty low angle. Aeolian cross beds are very high angle, like in your neat pictures. I thought I saw some obvious high angle cross beds below the EL Cap rock from an early shot farther back. Nasa mentioned there being cross bedding there. But when multiple closer shots were done, I saw that I was wrong. There was a roughly horizontal crack there filled with dust. It looked like the layers Above the crack were roughly horizontal, while those below it were at an angle. However, what it was is that the beds were sloping down toward the viewer nearly at the same slope as the rock surface, and the top side had eroded to a different angle. This was enough to make it look like a high angle differential, because of this orientation and fineness of layers. That experience has caused me to have a more critical eye here; It is difficult to find low angle contacts in such fine beds. This constant fineness is one of my arguments against ripples in their examples; ripples need some bed thickness to form in, and that would be a graded bed. I don't see those features here on close examination. There are a lot of broken rocks here. You'd think that at least a few would cleave along the bedding to show a clearly rippled surface, as is so commonly seen in the desert. I just dont see that here. I don't doubt that there are some examples of cross bedding here. It does look like there are sediment lenses in the zone of El Cap, and to its right, but I'd like to see some good close evidence.
Thanks for your comments and pictures! Good luck on the hard drive surgery!
Sure looks like high angle cross beds
Where did they go?
