Well as a letter it's well-written and appears to be from the heart but basing one's politics on the input of one individual like this Marine Lt. is as gullible as anybody that bases their perception of our war effort on the opinion of one Iraqi Dr. I think it's apparent to even the most ardent anti-war activist that our military goes to incredible lengths to avoid civilian casualties but I don't think that's the point in this war. Supposedly we're in Iraq as a fight against terrorism which is not necessarily caused by the politics of a nation but instead breeds in individuals and small groups based on their experiences in situations like the one we're in.
People in Baghdad don't get to experience the civilian casualties that did not occur because of our care. Their experience is instead seeing the few mistakes that did get by - those people ripped apart by a misguided bomb or shot down at a checkpoint because they got confused over orders to stop. The people that do die have friends, brothers, sisters and those left behind aren't looking at advantages of a deposed brutal leader but instead focus their hatred at the entity that spread the most recent blood. This, coupled with the huge disparity in economics between the vanquished and the conquerors, is the true breeding ground of terrorism. I'd love to help out the Lt. with his dilemna but I know in my heart that every day we stay in Iraq only adds to our nation's danger for the upcoming decades.
