re: A Way Forward in Iraq
Actually a fairly reasonable article, and by pointing out that Bush is already working on some of these ideas, seems to violate a cardinal principle of the media, which is that George W. Bush Can Do Nothing Right.
We have to be careful about the U.N. If you read the Iraqi blogs and other sources, they are well aware that the U.N. cooperated with Saddam in siphoning off their oil money, and many Iraqis are no more impressed with the United Nations than they are with the coalition.
I'm beginning to see the U.N. as occupying the same status in the liberal pantheon as the Pope did during the crusades: If the U.N. blesses it, it must be the right thing to do. ;)
Fifty-seven percent say they would like the foreign forces to leave immediately.
I can see that this statement has already acquired "meme" status. A lot depends on how the question is asked. The only question in this poll was:
Should US/British forces leave immediately (next few months) or stay longer?
In an earlier poll, the question allowed a little more flexibility of response:
Q: How long should coalition forces remain?
Until Iraq gov’t is in place 36%
Until security is restored 18%
Leave now 15%
Six months or more 10%
Few months 8%
I guess a lot also depends on what meaning one assigns to "immediately."
