Alright, first I have to tell you that I am the furthest thing from a Bush supporter but my contention here has nothing to do with this election.
In the overall scheme of things THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH HAS LITTLE TO NO EFFECT ON THE ECONOMY. The US economy is this huge beast that rises and falls in a predictable manner based on the overall greed and panic of the millions of citizens. As much as I'd love to pin the economic successes on the Presidents I've liked and pin the failures on the idiots, truth is, as far as I see it, that none have made more than a tiny bump on the huge sine wave of prosperity and fallback.
Now I absolutely concede that the American voters don't see things that way and if the US economy is riding high in the next election that it will be a huge boost to George Bush but we're still in the infancy of the eventual recovery and he'll rise or fall on the bumps between now and then.
Now, that's not to say that other factors besides the workings of the executive branch have little effect as well. Worldwide events such as major wars, energy and natural resource disruptions, terrorist acts and asteroid strikes can certainly bring even the largest trend to its knees.
