The X-15 powered flights over 40 years ago,
started reaching altitudes like 136,000 ft in 1960,
169,000ft in 1961.
Well...you know the rest.
The X-15 however was a government flying-machine,
with the full financial resources of US government/military behind it.
Rutan is obviously going for the 100km [62.4 miles up] altitude
record next month.
