Space/Science » in reply to Ocean Asphalt Patch a Deep-Seep Mystery

Asphalt is merely petroleum from which the volatile ingrediants have been removed, usually by heat.

If petroleum were subject to intense geothermal heat, the volatiles would be driven off, leaving asphalt as residue. This residue, could then be extruded on the ocean floor to form a layer resembling a highway. All natural, of course. No evidence of anything else.
