This isn't about "diversity" and never has been. Republicans have more Hispanics elected to high office than Democrats do. It's about the real party of ideological purity.
Forget the "center." I know where you think the "center" is. "Compromise?" When was the last time Democrats as a party moved toward the conservative position on anything at all?
