Space/Science » in reply to Mars Fossils Web Site

re: Oou what fun

There is no way to tell remotely whether we have seen Mars fossils or not, just as it is nigh unto impossible to adequately sort "life" from "non-life" in the Viking results from times gone by. The basic premise should be "could be," but that gets into realms of disputation and hysteria that run in circles.

We just can't know without being there, following the evidence, doing the science and so on. And I will lay money on the table that once we have people there, following the evidence and doing the science, they will come to blows disputing the meaning of the evidence and the science and there will still be no simple resolution to the question of Mars life and Mars fossils.

This site is pleasing in many ways, not least for its relentless tongue in cheek humour. Leave it to Canadian wit to sort the wheat from the chaff. As it were.

In an earlier version, sadly no longer directly accessible, the author proposed that the ubiquitous hematite spherules "grow in the ground like potatoes." Somehow that was extraordinarily delightful to my Irish soul! Yes! Of course!

But he also pointed out aspects of these little balls that few up to that time had noticed: the stalks they apparently grow on, for example, and the "roots" and "stems" that seem to hold them in place.

Plenty o' mysteries yet to sort through in this fine adventure. Oh yes!

Cheers, BRFelix
