Without a rudder, a Seawolf-class submarine would become directionally unstable. A rudder stuck to port or starboard would send the boat in circles.

Last year, a polar bear was caught munching on the rudder of the USS Jimmy Carter's sister boat, the USS Connecticut (SSN 22), causing minor damage.

Carter is a good man and gave honorable service in the Navy.
