Water retention would be a problem. The air plants would have to produce a waxy substance to cover itself and prevent evaporation. After micron-sized water droplets are absorbed they would have to be chemically altered to a form that is not as vulnerable to evaporation: perhaps a gel with a much higher boiling point than water.
