The major criteria for long term economical space travel. (in my opinion)

1. Extreme reliability (no argument here from anybody)

2. Fully (or nearly so) re-usable system for attaining near Earth orbit

3. Short turnaround time for this system

4. Re-usable nuclear powered deep space transport

5. Space station in near Earth orbit permit switching from shuttle to transport and to service deep space transport
