I suspect that's "Bull Dust"

That looks like Australian "bull dust". Bull dust is super fine and can flow like water. Often times the only way to extract a car stuck in bull dust is to winch it out from a tree (I almost got stuck in it on a dirt road between Quilpie and Thargomindah). I hope MER-B stays clear of it.
