Basalt can last for hundreds of years in contact with water

with little alteration. This is evidenced on Earth by black sand beaches and lava flows worldwide. The "Valley of Fires" lava flow in the Tularosa Valley of New Mexico is about 10,000 years old, gets rain and snow regularly, and looks fresh with no alteration. Much older basalts such as the Columbia River Flood Basalts, the Palisades of New York, Devils Tower WY, Devils Post Pile CA, Deccan Traps India, etc, have basalts millions of years old with little alteration. These people speak of basalt like it would fall apart if it got wet once. He speaks of "extremely brief periods" and "never wet basalt". These remarks are unfounded.
