Your reply confirms that it could be a great film or not. Calling it a second rate remake without seeing it is like salting your food before tasting.

At worst it sounds like a first rate attempt with a potentially second rate outcome.

The original was a very good movie mainly because it was a great story. The cast and performances were nothing special with the exception of Angela Lansbury who stole the show. There was no Bogart factor that makes it unique and beyond improvement.
