Iran has found new oilfields both in the southwestern parts and in the central parts of the country. For exampel the azadegan oilfield but also new fields in the Hosseinieh region. There have not yet been any discovery of large tar sand deposits in Iran. Iran has still not tapped the reserves in Caspian sea and the area has not been charted in detail.
