The world is already seeking nuclear weapons. The US sat on its hands during the Clinton administration and we were surprised by India and Pakistan and the administration helped to facilitate the delivery of our better guidance technology to China.
The US needs a tool that can be used in a manner consitent with the old nuclear artillery deployed in Europe around '53.
Why?
Because carpet bombing is obsolete.
Because our enemies are already trying to do the same thing.
Because it will act as a deterrent to those who feel the US must always use vulnerable ground troops and widen the range of responses we can take against nations that support terrorism.
North Korea is building nukes.
Iran is likely engaged in building nukes.
Libya was working on building nukes.
Saudi Arabia has a clandestine nuclear development program.
The arms race never went away- the US just ignored it for 8 years because the Soviet Union was down and out. Technology is America's edge. China and India can expend millions of soldiers and not feel the loss. America must remain on the cutting edge technologically to support freedom and democracy in the 21st century.
