That's what scientists did to measure the Earth-Sun distance! Go to the other side of the world and take the same data at the same time but very far away.
And because it took so long to travel so far away, those scientists also used the time to study the fauna, the flora, the geology of those far away lands...
Le Gentil was quite unsuccessful in those attempts!
