I've always insisted to my trekkie buddies that the transporter, which did create a faithful meat-simulacrum of the original, also killed the person who was scanned. The duplicate, of course, had the memories to believe it was the original, but it was a delusion. In STNG they examined a transporter malfunction which created two Rykers, and the dilemma was, which was the 'real' one. The answer, not addressed in the show, was that of course NEITHER was the real one, they were two golems. Scwartzenegger's 'Sixth Day' had a similar issue of a self-aware replicant that believed it was the original, but in THAT case, the original had been preserved. Not so with a transporter -- the original is expended (i.e., killed) to create one (or more) duplicates.
