Just as a point of comparison, Bush got 11.6 million votes more in 2004 than in 2000, Clinton got 2.5 million more in 1976, and Reagan got 10.6 million more in 1984.
Of course, realistically a lot of other factors influence these numbers. Turnout, number of voters, third parties, you name it. But more is more, and fewer is fewer.
By my count, Romney got 1.3 million fewer votes than McCain, and 3.4 million fewer than Bush in 2004.

Don't overdose on smug.
If the election had broken the other way with the same numbers, the Democrats would have lawsuits and investigations going in numerous states right now, and dark conspiracies and howls about "voter suppression" would be filling the media.
