At last! My claim for the Moebius
To bring this thread full-circle, I'll cap it off by noting that when I was doing a brief post-doc in the UK, I met a gentleman from South Africa (sensu strictu) who was was working on a serious plan to exploit the mineral resources of Antartica.
As non-signatories of the Antartic treaty, and world pariahs anyway, they felt no stigma.
The plan was to exploit a know deposit of platinum metals (essentially a continuation of the same platinum provine that occurs in South Africa (sensu latu), and ship the ore across the ice on hovercraft.
Social and political change brought down this scheme, too...
