Facts

That little piece by FOX News is itself pretty deceptive. Go see the movie and then decide.

For example, the claim about weekends at Camp David doesn't account for the fact that in the 32 weeks of the Bush presidency before 9/11 every one of those weekend holidays was a three day weekend. And, of those days off taken beyond each of those three day weekends, Bush took an entire month of vacation time! In his first eight months!!!

The point is that Mr. Bush was off the job for 42% of the first 8 months of his presidency. The man was asleep at the swithc...unengaged and uninvolved...preferring to play golf and cut wood rather than run the country.

And the film clearly depicts Bush as a deer in the headlights in that classroom. He sat silent and dumfounded for seven and a half minutes. Any normal person, upon hearing that three thousand American citizens had just been murdered (including an attack on the Pentagon) would have politely excused himself and immediately begun consultation with his cabinet and advisors. Instead he had no idea what to do.

Claims about the departure of the Bin Laden family are probably the weakest point in the movie...but the point is that at a time when virtually every flight in the country was grounded, the Bin Ladens got special permission to leave the country - it was a special favor to a family with close business ties to the Bush family. And, at no time did the FBI interview the Bin Ladens for any intelligence they may have had about their infamous relative. The point Moore was making was not that the Bin Ladens were involved in 9/11, but rather they were granted special favors because of their close ties to the Bush's.

As for the Taliban visit to Texas...yes Clinton approved the visit. But the visit was at the request and invitation of the the Bush family and UNOCAL. UNOCAL was courting the Taliban to secure a contract to build an oil pipeline in Afghaanistan. Moore's point was that the Bush family had business ties with the Taliban before 9/11.

What the movie does is depict George W. Bush as a dilettante prior to 9/11...more interested in having fun and being king than being a leader. AFter 9/11 it exposes the administration's difficulty in repsonding and underscores the weakness of its repsonse in Afghanistan (remember Bin Laden and the Taliban leaders are still on the loose - we sent only 11,000 troops there). It also exposes the duplicity of the administration in manufacturing a case for war against Iraq.

Go see the movie REB. Then you'll be in a position to judge for yourself.
