I'm glad you brought up this topic.

What about solar-panels for energy-hungry air conditioners?

In the southern United States, especially the hot-dry regions in southern California,
Arizona, Nevada, Utah, NM, and most of Texas, there are "tens of millions" of air-conditioners
pumping out badly needed cool-air between the months of May and October.
Think about it! In those hot dry regions of the USA, those "tens of millions" of AC's consume
tens of millions of kilowatts every "daylight" hour in the summertime.
Stress "daylight" hours.

Take a typical 18,000 BTU's/hour air-conditioner in someone's home in say Tucson, Arizona,
in the summertime!
18,000 BTU/hr converts to about 5 KW of power.
Now we have solar-panels that have energy conversion efficiencies comfortably over 30% [at least in the laboratories].
To operate a 5 KW air-conditioner you would need about 15 square meters of solar-panels
[close to 160 ft^2]. That would cover no more than 1/4th the roof of somebody's average suburban house.
It's doable!
