re: Hindsight.

Yes, it looks like many americans have no idea what it feels like to be invaded.
Stormed in your house at 5 in the morning, by soldiers screaming in an ugly, strange , incomprehensible language.
Being occupied by an overwhelmingly powerful military force shooting at innocent guys just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Being told to completely change your habits, forced to learn the language of the invader just to be on the "safe" side.

Continuing with the occupation, ergo the humiliation, the frustration.

Did the US ever think who was going to succeed Saddam?

Will he be a secular sunni, promoted for his pro-western views but not democratically elected? Like Saddam who used to be a western ally against Iran?
Will he be an Islamist Shiite, an Ayatollah, with lots of connection with Iran?
Will there be a Sunni leader, a Shiite leader and a Kurdish leader, fighting for their respective "rights to takeover this or that territory"?

Will it actually be, ô Miracle, a democracy?
With a party demanding, say, 3 things: 1)that Iraqis take control (nationalize) their oil (price and produced quantities); 2) that the US immediately dismantles its bases on their ground; 3) to build an effective military counterweight to the Israeli hegemony in the area, by acquiring, if necessaery a nuclear arsenal.(Like France and the UK did after WW2).

The US cannot even let a democratically elected Iraqi government imagine or propose any one of such programs and americans can't be sure that free elections won't lead to such a government.
It's very unlikely the US will accept a democratically elected Iraqi government; however, it's the only way for Bush to declare victory in Iraq.
I'm afraid americans won't get that catch22 infernal spiral situation into which Bush got its country, by november.
