A future different from what we expected

Not only does it seem that we are confined to this galaxy, and this solar system, but also to this one planet. This is in stark contrast to many people's expectations for space colonization, warp drive, or whatever fantasy happens to be popular. The reality is that something very different is going to happen instead.

What might happen? Possibilities include:

1. Strange biological evolution, human selection rather than natural selection, gene splicing leads to a shift in overall behaviour and thinking of our species.

2. We discover a new level of complexity in the universe and we no longer have interest in mundane spacetime.

3. Experience machines take over, cybernetics, people migrate into virtual reality. We become machines. Earth dies. Since there is no reference, we forget that biological life ever existed, or could exist elsewhere in the universe.

4. Something totally wierd happens. So wierd that nobody would ever have predicted it.

5. All of the above.
