We started off discussing how to protect your home Wi-Fi network from outside intruders.
Now you're changing the topic to how to keep your laptop and your passwords, banking details etc. safe, when logged-in to someone else's open network. I agree that's another and vastly more difficult issue.
I use secure connections, encryption etc., and don't regularly visit the same place. Not been had yet...
