In addition, the portrayal of the South Pole case as cyberterrorism met with some skepticism from scientists. The actual data from the South Pole station that could have been downloaded by the cyberattackers was almost entirely highly technical astrophysics research—mostly about cosmic radiation. “Its value on the open market is negligible,” West said.

Here's a case of small picture thinking. The fact that many scientists lean left is not surprising, but their assessment on the value of the data is "negligible" is incorrect.

That cosmic radiation research will lead to many different discoveries. The recent increase in the sun's output is able to be monitored by cosmic radiation, and in the future the data will be used to develop technologies that are powered by the earth's cosmic radiation flow-patterns.
Add to that, the fact that this data will eventually be extrapolated to predict and identify the way the Earth absorbs and distributes solar radiation.

The south pole research station data will be some of the raw data used to protect the earth in the future from a continued increase in solar radiation.

The sun has specific cycles it flows through. Some of these will make today's solar spots appear like weak storms. What folks don't yet realize is that the sun broadcasts over a vast spectra and these surges increase these higher frequency wave forms which ionize cells, distort the DNA (lead to faster aging) , and cause cancer. It's not just increasing the quantity of the same type of radiation - it is exposing us all to new shorter wavelengths of radiation and light our bodies are not able to assimilate.

It's not necessarily a real pretty picture unless high frequency solar research continues at breakneck speed. We will need high technology and industry more than ever. In the future (ideally within 100 years or so), I see not only generic "shielded" cities here on earth - but the technologies which can create portable and permanent "null-fields" which can hook into and absorb these super high frequency wavelengths and what's best of all - use them to power our future world. These are the same type of technologies which will shield astronauts from cosmic radiation and allow safer colonizing of other planets and infinitely safer space travel.
