Kerry Space Policy Announcement Forthcoming

From Spacepolitics.com: Kerry is coming up with something.

On the kerryspace mailing list today there was a message that suggests that the Kerry campaign is drafting a position paper on space issues. Some highlights:

The effort is being led by Lori Garver, a former NASA associate administrator for policy and plans and former executive director of the NSS.
The policy seems to focus on terrestrial applications of space technology and services, including some things previously reported (performing materials research and other science on ISS), as well as helium-3 from the Moon. (Please, for credibility's sake someone tell him to take the helium-3 part out until, say, there are fusion reactors on Earth that can use it…)
The policy would call for funding NASA at its current levels or higher.
The policy would put a greater emphasis on commercial involvement, including prizes (which, as previously reported, would be consistent with his overall science and technology policy.)

"Helium-3" sounds like going to the moon talk. Whether we have the fusion technology now or not it wouldn't hurt to get a jump on the resources. In a word: encouraging.

Prizes and private sector are what we all talk about folks. This is VERY encouraging!

Space exploration is the one thing I REALLY like about Bush. If Kerry's plan keeps the "moving outward" philosophy then it's an easy choice for me at the voting booth. Building the capability to travel beyond LEO is all that will matter for Kerry's term(s). The moon and Mars are for other presidents down that road.

Two other BIG issues, (1) Kerry speaks of the importance of energy independence and has made it part of his platform. Bush has failed utterly in this critical area of national security. (2) Kerry will give us a clean slate with all the nations in the world who no longer trust our good intentions. It's important to rebuild the bridges to our allies that Bush burned.
