A paradox - why isn't more oil the answer?

Clearly screwing up more of America to get the last little bit of oil isn't worth the cost in environmental terms.

And since we're going to have to wean ourselves from oil sooner or later, sooner would be wiser.

Obvious except to politicians and those for who creature comforts are the most important thing in their lives.
