Clinton is a smooth guy, very likable.
Those that are on board with the belief that he and Hillary are looking to 2008 would have to be boosted by his overall performance. He was naturally supportive of Kerry but his tone on Bush seemed far more tolerant than we have come to expect from high profile Democrats.
Letterman was lobbing him straight lines like, "Don't you think that the problems in Africa with Aids etc. are more important than invading Iraq?" To which he answered, "It doesn't have to be an either, or question, certainly the problems in Africa deserve attention and my Foundation is doing great work there on Aids." There were other dimwitted Letterman softballs but he seemed disinclined to swing at them. The major problem he voiced with the Iraq War is the fact that it has strained our military resources and prevented us from committing more troops to Afghanistan. He supports Kerry's promise to increase US troop strength by 50,000 and suggested that NATO should be brought into Iraq
He laid out a scenario for Kerry to win by convincing the people that he can do a better job of providing security but he did not seem totally convinced he can pull it off. He said that Kerry must convince the American people that he is equal to Bush in the area of security before his better domestic policies can give him the edge.
That was my impression. No doubt those of other persuasion may have a totally different opinion on what he said.
A conservative take on Clinton's Letterman appearance
