I think I know what the problem is for the Democrats. For decades, they've been pouring out whatever pap suits their political goals, secure in the knowledge that most of the media and other information distribution industries would swallow it whole, and pass it along with little or no comment.
Now, with the internet, pretty much anybody can call "bullshit" and see that the information gets out there.
In short, lying used to be so much easier.
