If McCain had been the 2000 nominee, and beated Gore in Florida by the skin of his teeth, he would be just as hated by Democrats. Democrats like him only because he sets himself against Bush. In the 2000 primaries, he looked to be a lot more beatable than Bush, which is why Democrats crossed over in primaries to vote for him.

Again, had McCain won the presidency in 2000 the same way, the good feelings would have evaporated quite quickly.
