Beer and Geology
I posted earlier about the upcoming Geological Society of America's fall meeting. Thanks to those who responded to suggest interesting sessions, I'll see what I can do about reporting back on the meeting in November.
Overlooked by all, including myself, until I was registering for the meeting this morning and I found this Special Session scheduled for Sunday Night:
Sunday, November 7
7:30 – 9:30 p.m., Ballroom, Colorado Convention CenterJoin us immediately following the Welcoming Reception in the Exhibit Hall for a very special session entitled “Beer and Geologyâ€. This special session will focus on the impact of geology on the brewing processes and taste of beer.
List of Speakers:
John W. Hickenlooper, Mayor of Denver, Colorado - Keynote Speaker. Mayor Hickenlooper will discuss the role of geology in beer.
Alex Maltman of Wales will discuss the impacts of groundwater geochemistry on the water used in the brewing of beer and, in many cases, the type of beer associated with certain famous brewing regions of the world.
Thomas J. (Dr. Colorado) Noel will present a special talk entitled “Rocks and Beer: A Liquid History of Coloradoâ€.
Following the keynote speakers, attendees will have the opportunity to sample various beers from local Colorado breweries.
BTW, John Hickenlooper is a former geologist turned brewmaster / resturant owner turned major city mayor.
