re: Capitalism is fine, when it limits itself to free trade

You can choose to participate as much as you want to in consumption or any of the other "evils" of capitalism.

Nobody's forcing you to buy a cell phone or a Hummer.

In the meantime, you can also participate in capitalism's other results: a standard of living, measured by any reasonable standards, almost unmatched in human history. Even for the poor. People in the West swim in this prosperity like fish in the water, and equally unaware of it. It is instructive for me to visit the family cemetery near my grandparents' old house, and look at all the tombstones of the many children buried there in the old days.

A lot of people sniff about the rat race. Maybe. I dare say Thoreau would have written differently if living on Walden Pond were something he had to do all his life, and not just a lifestyle experiment. There are many people on Earth who "live deliberately" their whole lives, and almost without exception, flee their lifestyle as soon as any other choice becomes available.
