It's a little more complicated than that, but you do have a good point that needs to be studied

It is true that in the near IR the largest Earth bound telescopes blow Hubble away with their resolution, adaptive optics (AO) have greatly expanded what is possible in terms of resolution from Earth. However, without the use of Laser guide star techniques we can only use AO on maybe 1% of the sky- hubble doesnt need to bother with AO.

Most importantly, AO is easier with longer wavelengths, however the technology is progressing to shorter wavelengths- pictures in visible wavelengths are not a problem with hubble. So Hubble does present some advantages that we dont have on Earth.

However, ultimately the resolution you can get with a scope is determined by its size, and you are a lot less limited in size by building it down here... The OWL is being seriously studied and designed, but I think we will see a 30 meter scope first- I imagine it will be used to work out the engineering difficulties in building a 100 meter... The prmary mirror in both will of course be segmented- there is no way you could build a single piece of glass that large and have it remain usable as a telescope...

Ultimately, the true answer to getting incredible resolution will be space borne arrays of telescopes linked iterferometrically... then we might see resolution equivalent to kilometer scale telescopes.
Or even larger...
