The shrine was seriously damaged in 1991 when Saddam, who isn't as careful about such things as we are, plowed into it and flattened a Shiite uprising. Obviously, it was repaired eventually. Then Saddam filled a few more mass graves with tens of thousands of Shiites.

The same Saddam who killed Sadr's father and two brothers. You know, the same Saddam now in jail thanks to us.
