It was peaceful enough that the streets were clear enough for cars to get through. That being so, without any noticeable provocation the police drove cars which emitted tear gas through the crowds

And it all went to hell, as people were trying to get away, cops were chasing them, beating the crap out of anyone they could catch.

I don't have a lot of patience with demonstrators, normally. Not even a little. And this was indeed a police riot.
