I'm dying to hear how we are going to employ "economic might and principles" against goons hiding in caves and cellars and planning our destruction.

A good case can be made that our principles are the only reason bin Laden is alive, and people like Sadr, Zarqawi, and others. Does anyone doubt that massive saturation bombing attacks on the civilian locations where they hole up would have killed them a long time ago?

Not that I would have done it differently. But how the hell do you nail Zarqawi with principles? What can you do or say to convince a man who saws off heads not to kill you?
