Creating a bogus website baited with phoney e-mail to perpetrate identity theft is called "phishing". The suckers or "phish" are lured by phoney e-mail supposably from Bank of America, Wells Fargo, etc. to a bogus look-alike website where the phish are asked to reveal social security numbers, mother's maiden name, etc. Within a month, the phish will have his/her FICO number zeroed out due to a bad credit history. Internet con artists are always trying to phish my wife (she works for a small firm). The crooks were phishing at NASA Ames a couple weeks ago. This sort of crap will slowly kill Internet commerce if it isn't brought under control soon.
