CNN said Tuesday that it would run the ad if the group that produced it, the Log Cabin Republicans, removes one photo. That image, on screen for about two seconds at the end of the ad, shows Fred Phelps, an anti-homosexual Baptist minister, holding two signs that say "God Hates Fags" as he protested outside the funeral of Matthew Shepard. Shepard, a 21-year-old gay college student, was brutally murdered in Wyoming in October 1998.
During the protest marches some months back, I posted links to photos of marchers carrying signs that were at least as offensive as this idiot's. Yet, somehow a nut like Phelps is being held up as an example of Republican attitudes, whereas I got a load of grief for even suggesting that the leftist loons had anything whatsoever to do with the mainstream Democrats.
A conservative advertisement claiming that the Democrats were "dividing the nation," containing pictures of those signs, would be instantly condemned by every liberal here.
