re: Facing Unpleasant Facts

Working link here. Yours was accidentally truncated.

When reading this article, which makes some good points, keep this in mind:

- If we had gone into Afghanistan, and ignored Iraq, the situation would be no better. I don't think this simple fact has sunk in around here.

It goes without saying that al Qaeda, which was based in Afghanistan and helped rule it, is probably a lot more pissed about the loss of Afghanistan than they are about Iraq.

- If we had ignored both nations, which some have said we should have done (nobody here as far as I know), what would have happened then?

Bush's philosophy is that we can't become fortress America. It won't work in the long run. We have to eliminate the breeding grounds of terrorism by creating conditions of freedom that no longer support it. Whether or not it's a successful philosophy remains to be seen. But isolationism isn't the answer either, no matter how much you spend on security.
