A little more context:
The Al Anbar province is the hotbed for all the personnel and weapons being shipped into Iraq from Syria. Marines have done a lot of heavy fighting in this area pinching off this route. The main highways are insurgent pipelines, and the names of the cities along that route are familiar ones.
