Current Events » in reply to CBS has launched an executive level internal investigation into the forgeries

This can go three ways

1) Dan Rather or one of his staff members produced the fraudulent documents.
2) An idiot "supporting" Kerry produced the documents and passed them to CBS.
3) Someone working for the Bush campaign produced the documents as a Trojan Horse and passed them to CBS knowing they would be detected on the Internet.

Of the three possibilities, 3) is the biggest stretch. It requires a huge leap of faith that CBS would publish the documents without detecting the fraud. Also there would be the danger that CBS might detect the fraud before broadcasting "60 Minutes" and then pursue the people originating the documents. The whole scheme could easily boomerang.

The possibility that Dan Rather himself or a staff member produced the documents is also hard to believe. I think they would have done a better job (used an old typewriter) or not allowed the documents to appear on the Internet.

Option 2) is the most likely case. I suspect it was a moonbat associated with Moveon.com or one of the Democratic PACs. The moonbat probably had a trusted connection with one of Dan Rather's staff. We'll find out soon enough. I suspect Dan Rather maybe retiring from journalism in the not too distant future after a few of his staff members get the sack.

One thing is for sure. The credibility of CBS is shot. Any future documents that mysteriously appear on "60 Minutes" will be assumed frauds.
