Conservatives aren't about budgets, its all about culture. And culture isn't about where you're from, its about where you think you belong.

They're about growing up like Beaver Cleaver, in Mayberry, or in a nice house in suburbia, with a Mom who stays home and serves dinner in a dress, and a dad who works in an office and eats dinner wearing his necktie. Its about playing football in high school and going to college and getting a degree in business administration, and working in an office and marrying a nice girl just like Mom.

Its about going to church on Sundays, and getting a mortgage, and pinning on those lieutenant's bars in wartime, and driving a V-8, and taking the kids to Little League, and having good insurance and having a dog AND a cat and a paper route when you're a kid so you can learn about responsibility before you move up to the real world.

There's nothing wrong with that. Absolutely nothing wrong with any of it. But not everyone lives like that. In fact, hardly anyone lives like that any more, not even Conservatives. As a matter of fact, hardly anyone ever lived like that. Its all a fantasy, like the Frontier in Western movies. It wasn't like that at all.

Real people grow up in the projects, and think they've arrived when they rent a detached house. Mom works all the time and Dad isn't around, or there's more than one. Real people never had a pet when they were a kid, and if they were lucky enough to go to college the last thing they wanted to do was study business administration. And when wartime came, it wasn't an opportunity to build character or learn leadership skills. It was something you just had to hold your breath and get through as best you could, as quickly as possible, and hope your luck held.

Conservatives are a different tribe, they are a minority who think everyone is just like them because they don't know anyone who isn't like them. And now they've started to notice there aren't as many of them as there used to be, that folks like them are becoming scarce, and those other folks seem to be everywhere, taking over everything, moving into their America, and wanting to take their place, their jobs, their prestige, they even want to marry their daughters.

They're angry, and they're scared. They want to take their country back. It belongs to them. And they want all those other people to just go away.
