Three years, it isn’t long enough for the raw edge to wear off.
Much has changed since then, for myself, the Nation and World. I’ve seen friends go off, not to return. Old nightmares have come back, and fresh ones jostle for equal time in my sleep.
Someone said welcome to World War Four, I’ve come to agree with that. This one will take as long as WW3, also known as the Cold War. But it will be far bloodier, and some of the battles will be fought on American soil.
If you know much about recent history you know that September 11 2002 was not the first battle in this war. Far from it, for over 20 years this war has been simmering out of sight from the average citizen. It has taken place in the twilight occupied by Covert Ops, in deserts, jungles and mountains across the world. Many had died before that clear calm September morning, their sacrifice unnoticed. They stood forth to protect us from the likes of Bin Laudin, and for the most part they succeeded. But, it couldn’t last forever, sooner or later the enemy would find a way.
I’ve listened to a number of specials on talk radio over the last week. Stories from the kith and kin of those who lost their lives that terrifying smoky morning. Firefighter’s widows, Policemen’s sons, Civilian’s daughters.
I find the rage still as fresh.
And, I cry.
